If you make your own belts, the hardware shelf is worth a look right now: every solid brass belt buckle and keeper we carry is marked down.
The Hardware section is small. It holds six pieces, all built around one buckle design in two widths. Nothing new has gone into it lately, so this is not a launch. Still, it is the part of the catalog most people find last, and the sale is a fair reason to point at it.
Two widths of solid brass belt buckle
The buckle comes in 1.25 inch (31.75 mm) and 1.5 inch (38 mm) widths. Each width has three options: the buckle alone, the keeper loop alone, or the two together as a combo.
- 1.5 inch: the buckle, the keeper loop, or the buckle and keeper combo
- 1.25 inch: the buckle, the keeper loop, or the buckle and keeper combo
The width means the width of the strap, not the buckle frame. So measure the belt blank you are cutting, or the belt you already wear, before you order. A buckle one size too wide lets the strap shift inside the frame. On the other hand, one size too narrow will not go on at all.
What leather it is made for
Each product page gives a thickness range, and it is worth reading before you buy. The 1.25 inch buckle suits 8 to 10 oz belt leather. The 1.5 inch buckle takes leather up to 10 oz. One ounce of leather is about 0.4 mm, so 10 oz works out to roughly 4 mm.
For that reason, the buckles are not a match for the straps in our Leather Straps section. Those are 1 inch and 0.25 inch wide and 7 to 8 oz thick, which is lighter and narrower than either buckle expects.
How a solid brass belt buckle ages
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, and it darkens with handling and air. These buckles have a protective finish over the natural brass color, and the product pages say they age toward a vintage look. In practice, that means a slow, warm change rather than a sudden one. If you want the metal to stay bright, however, you will be working against the finish. Our guide to caring for antique brass and nickel snap caps covers the same metal on a smaller scale.
Why the keeper is worth having
The keeper loop holds the tail of the belt flat after it passes through the buckle. Without one, the tail flaps and the edge wears where it rubs. Buying the combo also means the buckle and keeper arrive in the same width and the same finish, so you do not have to match them yourself.
At the time of writing, the 1.5 inch combo is $12.99 against a regular $19.99, and the 1.25 inch combo is $11.99 against $17.99. The buckles and keepers sold on their own are marked down too.
A quick check before you order
- Measure the strap width, not the old buckle.
- Check the leather thickness against the range on the product page.
- Decide whether you need a keeper, or already have one that fits.
Every piece carries our 30-day return policy, so if the width turns out wrong, just contact us. Even so, measuring first saves you the round trip. The full solid brass belt buckle line is in the Hardware section.
